Last December AV-Comparatives ran a dynamic whole-product test and a performance test. In the most recent instance of both tests eScan rated ADVANCED+ with the highest rating with very few false positives. All three received ICSA Labs certification for virus detection Norton also got virus cleaning certification.ĪV-Comparatives regularly rates products for on-demand malware removal and for proactive detection of new threats. For example, AVG, ESET, and Norton: All achieved VB100 in the last ten tests, all got certification for both detection and cleaning from West Coast Labs and separate checkmark certification for detecting Trojans and general malware. These are good results, but some apps have done better. It attained the VB100 award in eight of Virus Bulletin's last ten tests. The more common Linux-based rescue CDs typically don't allow this sort of file manipulation fortunately eScan's is based on Windows PE.Ī doesn't include eScan in its tests, but many of the other labs do. On the advice of MicroWorld tech support, I used the CD's "DOS Prompt" option to restore a valid copy of a damaged file, which fixed the problem. A full scan with the rescue CD caught a number of threats but didn't stop the crashing. The installer runs a quick scan to wipe out active malware. I installed the product on all thirteen of my malware-infested systems without difficulty. In this instance eScan's relative obscurity pays off-it's not on the hit-list so they don't attempt to block it. Some of my malware samples actively fight back against dozens of well-known security products by tweaking the Registry to prevent their installation. Overall, the interface isn't something to boast about. Clicking the help icon for clarification brings up eScan's wiki-based online help system, a system that's only partially context-sensitive. Screens tend to be busy and over-filled with information. Once you get out of the main window, for example to run an antivirus scan or change configuration settings, the interface makeover vanishes.
